Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye that occurs with age.  Cataracts become visually significant once they impair your ability to drive, read, or perform other important activities.  They are the leading cause of reversible blindness worldwide.  If you notice symptoms such as blurry vision, glare or halos at night that cannot be improved with glasses alone, you may be a candidate for cataract surgery.  We use the latest state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical technology to ensure that your cataract surgery will be as safe and effective as possible.  A wide variety of options exist for improving your vision and can be specifically tailored to your visual needs.

Glaucoma Screening and Treatment

Glaucoma is often a silent disease that causes progressive vision loss over time due to increased eye pressure.  It is more common in the elderly but can have an earlier onset especially with a family history.  Vision loss begins in the periphery and can only be detected with a dilated eye exam and visual field testing.  Treatment consists initially of pressure-lowering eye drops and may require surgical intervention if drops are not sufficient to control progression of vision loss.

Close Up on Eyes
Diabetic Eye Disease and Macular Degeneration

Once you are diagnosed with diabetes, you should get screened annually with a dilated fundus exam for diabetic eye disease.  Elevated blood sugar over time causes progressive damage to the small capillaries and arterioles found within the retina.  Strict blood sugar control and early detection through routine examination are key to preventing visual damage from diabetic retinopathy.

Macular degeneration is a disease that results in deteriorating central vision.  There are two forms:  dry and wet.  Patients with dry macular degeneration should be monitored for progression to wet macular degeneration, in which abnormal blood vessels can damage the central vision further.  If your diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration is progressing, you may require retinal laser and/or injections.

Eye Exam
Blepharoplasty

With age and genetics comes increased elasticity of the upper and lower eyelids.  If you find yourself unhappy with the cosmetic appearance of your droopy eyelids, or you find they are impairing your field of vision, blepharoplasty is an option to consider.  We perform safe and efficient blepharoplasty surgery as an in-office procedure.  Your surgery will be painless and you will be given medication to help you relax.  All sutures are dissolvable and recovery time is as quick as just a couple of weeks!  See eefore and After Photos .

Eyes and Brows
Pterygium and Chalazion Surgery

Pterygium, from the Greek word meaning "wing" (pterygos), is a fleshy growth from the conjunctiva onto the cornea.  Caused by excessive sun or chronic irritant exposure, a pterygium may require surgical removal before it begins to encroach on the visual axis or cover the pupil.  Pterygium surgery is usually performed in the operating room.

A chalazion or "stye" is a lump on the eyelid caused by clogged meibomian glands.  Initially red, swollen and painful, styes should resolve with warm compresses and lid hygiene within a few weeks.  If they persist, you may require a steroid injection or surgical excision as a quick in-office procedure to aid resolution.
